The place of magic in the intellectual history of Europe
Lynn Thorndike's 1905 Columbia University doctoral dissertation on magic in European thought, issued in New York by Columbia University Press and Macmillan for an academic readership. The single illustration is the engraved seal of King's College, New York: a seated crowned figure holding an open book, flanked by four naked children, with a Hebrew tetragrammaton in radiant clouds above, a rising sun at right, and Latin mottoes set in a circular border, usable as a roundel, emblem, or lettering model.
