Point and pillow lace : a short account of various kinds ancient and modern, and how to recognize them

Sharp, Mary · 1899 · New York : E.P. Dutton ; London : J. Murray · 53 pictures

A collector's handbook on identifying needlepoint and bobbin lace, written by Mary Sharp and published in 1899 by E.P. Dutton in New York and John Murray in London for amateur students and buyers of antique lace. The plates are close-range photographs of lace borders and fragments shot against black, so the thread reads as white line on a solid ground: scrolling foliage, scalloped edges, floral sprigs and open mesh grounds that convert directly into high-contrast patterns, borders and repeating textures.
