Point and pillow lace : a short account of various kinds ancient and modern, and how to recognize them
A collector's handbook of lace types by Mary Sharp, published in London and New York in 1899 for antiquarians, needleworkers and buyers learning to identify hand-made lace. The 57 plates are photographs of lace fragments laid flat on black grounds, showing scrolling foliage, flower sprays, birds and scalloped borders as white line against dark, with dotted fillings and net grounds that read as ready-made halftone textures, repeat patterns and border strips.
