Polarisation of light

Spottiswoode, William, 1825-1883 · 1874 · London, Macmillan and co. · 1 picture

A popular scientific treatise on the polarization of light by the mathematician William Spottiswoode, published by Macmillan in London in 1874 for students and general readers attending or following Royal Institution-style lectures. The chromolithographed plate shows interference figures seen through crystals in polarised light: concentric rainbow rings crossed by dark brushes, four-lobed spirals and green crosses on black and yellow grounds, usable as ready-made colour wheels, radial gradients and optical diagrams.
