A general astronomy textbook by American astronomer Simon Newcomb, published by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1878 for students and lay readers. The wood-engraved figures are labelled diagrams: orbits of Mars's moons as ruled ellipses on black, a telescope's light path in section, hatched eyepiece fields with spider lines, and globes ringed around the sun.
