Popular pastimes for field and fireside;
A household book of games, amusements and handicrafts written by Caroline L. Smith and published by M. Bradley & Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1867, aimed at families arranging indoor and outdoor entertainments. The plates here are pen-drawn ornamental capitals in which a blackletter or roman letterform, shaded with rows of dots and hatching, sits inside loose penwork scrollwork and flourishes, giving designers a drop-cap alphabet and detachable flourish motifs for borders and corners.
