Portraits : line engravings by Nanteuil and other distinguished engravers
A 1916 New York catalogue issued by the dealers M. Knoedler & Co. for collectors of line-engraved portraits by Robert Nanteuil and his contemporaries, with an appended technical account of how such plates were cut. Its plates diagram burins, scrapers, gravers and sandbag supports, hands gripping a burin over a copper plate, and graded swatches of parallel and cross-hatched line, alongside a foliate woodcut initial T — useful for tool silhouettes, engraved texture samples and printers' ornament.
