Snell, Henry James · 1874 · London : Brodie & Middleton : Simpkin, Marshall · 57 pictures

A practical manual by Henry James Snell, published in London in 1874 by the artists' colourmen Brodie & Middleton, teaching amateur and trade painters to work in enamel on glass, china and tiles and to mix their own vitreous pigments. The wood engravings show studio tools in isolation — flat hog brushes, palette boxes with pigment wells, a hand holding a tile palette, kiln and muffle fittings — small, high-contrast shapes useful as spot cuts and tool silhouettes.
