Primer of design

Barry, Charles Alfred · 1878 · Boston, Lee and Shepard; New York, C.T. Dillingham · 70 pictures

A drawing manual on ornamental design by Charles Alfred Barry, published in Boston by Lee and Shepard in 1878 for schools and art students learning to build patterns from plant forms. The plates are outline-only line drawings of leaves, buds and blossoms arranged symmetrically inside squares, hexagons, diamonds, lozenges and quatrefoil frames, giving designers ready rosettes, panel fillings and geometric border units that can be filled, tiled or recoloured.
