Idea de vn principe politico christiano : representada en cien empresas
Emblem book of statecraft by the Spanish diplomat Diego de Saavedra Fajardo, printed at Munich in 1640 by Nicolaus Heinrich with engravings by Johann Sadeler, addressed to the Christian prince in training. Each plate sets a single device — a bare and leafing tree, twined pillars under a crown, rostral column hung with galleys — inside an oval frame with a Latin motto on a ribbon and strapwork, fruit swags and shells at the corners, giving designers ready-made cartouches, mottoes and compact symbolic scenes.
