The principles of beauty
An 1857 essay on aesthetics by the physician John Addington Symonds the elder, issued in London by Bell and Daldy for readers following mid-Victorian debates on the nature of beauty. The plates are thin-line engraved geometry: ellipses of varying proportion inscribed in rectangles, crossed by diagonals and axes with foci circled and points lettered, printed on cream paper with foxing that designers can use as ready-made hairline grids and proportion figures.
