Mendeleev's two-volume chemistry textbook, translated by George Kamensky and Thomas Lawson and issued by Longmans, Green in London and New York in 1897 for university students and working chemists. The wood-engraved figures set laboratory glassware and industrial plant in plain outline and stipple, as in the timber-framed brine graduation tower on its brick basin, giving designers small technical vignettes with heavy hatched shadow and open white ground.
