The printed book
Harry Gidney Aldis's short history of printing, issued by Cambridge University Press in 1916 for students, collectors and readers of the book trade. The plates are facsimile page openings from incunabula and early printed books: woodcut Books of Hours borders with scrolls and architecture, blackletter and gothic text columns, decorated initials, and enlarged type specimens useful as period letterforms, frames and page layouts.
