Printing types, their history, forms, and use; a study in survivals
Daniel Berkeley Updike's two-volume history of type, issued by Harvard University Press in 1922 for printers, typographers, and students of book design. Plates reproduce specimen pages, blackletter and roman text blocks, initial letters with pen-drawn flourishes, and woodcut initials framing flowers, giving designers period letterforms, decorated capitals, and dense set text to copy or trace.
