Cristóbal Pérez de Herrera's collection of Spanish moral proverbs, Christian counsels and philosophical riddles, reissued in Madrid in 1733 by the heirs of Francisco del Hierro for devout lay readers, with thirteen emblems and their plates. The pictures here are small letterpress woodcut ornaments: triangular pedestals topped by doves with spread wings, rosette and fruit carving below, and a grotesque cartouche of a crowned face flanked by reclining figures and scrollwork, useful as section breaks, spot ornaments or repeating border units.
