A 1920 American study of clothing and its social and psychological meanings, written by Frank Alvah Parsons, head of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, for design students and general readers. Its 150 halftones reproduce European painted portraits from the Renaissance through the seventeenth century, documenting bodices, lace collars, pearl ropes, farthingales and headdresses in soft grey tone against dark grounds.
