Veen, Otto van, 1556-1629, Horace, Verdussen, Hieronymus, 1553?-1635, printer · 1607 · Antuerpiae : Ex officina Hieronymi Verdussen, auctoris aere & cura · 103 pictures

An emblem book of 1607 in which the Antwerp painter Otto van Veen fitted engraved pictures to moral maxims drawn from Horace, printed by Hieronymus Verdussen for Latin-reading collectors and students. The plates set two or three classical figures in the foreground against Italianate towns, city walls and open landscape, with personifications, putti and Cupids acting out each precept; useful for allegorical figure groups, architectural backdrops and antique dress.
