Quarles' Emblems
Francis Quarles's seventeenth-century English emblem poems, reissued by N. Tibbals and Co. of New York for nineteenth-century Protestant household devotional reading. Each plate sets a winged child soul and Divine Love in a dense black-ground roundel—walking on a globe, blowing a flaming heart, carrying a chalice—ringed by cross or heart borders and surrounded by engraved scrollwork, grapes, urns, and cartouches that can be lifted whole as frames or ornaments.
