Quarles' emblems: illustrated by Charles Bennett and W. Harry Rogers
A Victorian reissue of Francis Quarles's 1635 devotional emblem book, redrawn in 1861 by Charles Bennett and W. Harry Rogers for James Nisbet of London and its Protestant family readership. Each plate sets a small allegorical scene of winged cupids, skeletons and globes inside a medallion, wrapped in strapwork cartouches, scrolling foliage, mottoes on ribbons and hearts-and-crosses borders ready to be lifted as frames.
