Quinti Horatii Flacci emblemata : imaginibus in aes incisis, notisq[ue], illustrata

Veen, Otto van, 1556-1629, Horace, Veen, Gijsbert van, 1558-1630, engraver · 1612 · Antuerpiae : Prostant apud Philippum Lisaert, auctoris aere & curae · 104 pictures

An emblem book by the Antwerp painter Otto van Veen, published there in 1612 with engravings by his brother Gijsbert, setting maxims from Horace's odes and epistles as pictures for humanist readers of Latin. The 104 copperplates stage allegories in deep landscapes and Italianate streets — winged Time with his scythe, Minerva in crested helmet, drunken satyrs, merchants at a counting table — built from strong figure silhouettes, hatched skies and classical columns, arcades and towers.
