Quinti Horatij Flacci Emblemata : imaginibus in aes incisis, notis[que] illustrata

Veen, Otto van, 1556-1629, Horace. Selections. 1612 · 1612 · Antuerpiae : Prostant apud Philippum Lisaert ... · 107 pictures

An emblem book of moral maxims drawn from Horace, compiled and designed by the Antwerp painter Otto van Veen and published by Philip Lisaert in 1612 for humanist readers who read Latin verse alongside pictures. The 107 square copperplate engravings set allegorical scenes in Roman streets, arcaded courtyards and open countryside, with winged Time wielding a scythe, putti carrying wreaths and hourglasses, personified virtues on pedestals and crowds of gesturing figures in classical dress, useful for allegorical figure groups, architectural backdrops and emblematic props.
