A multi-volume anthology of letters by Renaissance and Baroque painters, sculptors and architects, edited by Giovanni Gaetano Bottari and printed in Rome by the Pagliarini brothers in 1757 for antiquarians and artists. The plates here are letterpress ornament: inhabited initials with birds and cherubs inside scrolled frames, a headpiece of paired mermaid caryatids flanking foliage, and an eagle-topped roundel holding an interlaced monogram—stock material for drop caps, rules and crest devices.
