An eight-volume Roman anthology of letters on painting, sculpture and architecture by artists of the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, compiled by Giovanni Gaetano Bottari and printed by Niccolò and Marco Pagliarini in 1757 for antiquarians and art scholars. The pictures are letterpress ornaments: woodcut headpieces with winged figures and grotesque sphinxes, initial letters framed by scrolling foliage and urns, and cartouche tailpieces enclosing small landscape or allegorical scenes, usable as decorative initials, rules and chapter markers.
