A 1574 treatise on the theory of imprese by Luca Contile, printed at Pavia by Girolamo Bartoli, cataloguing the personal devices of the Accademia degli Affidati for its members and courtly readers. Each of the 184 engravings sets a small emblem scene—doves, flames, comets, a dragon, twin columns, bare hills—inside a heavy strapwork cartouche with herms, putti, fruit swags and trophies, with Latin mottoes on ribbons and the member's nickname below: ready-made frames, banderoles and emblem motifs.
