A 1556 Venetian treatise by Paolo Giovio, with an added discourse by Girolamo Ruscelli, on imprese — the mottoes and pictorial devices used by courtiers, soldiers and lovers, printed by Giordano Ziletti for an educated Italian readership. The plates here are small woodcut historiated initials in which figures in sixteenth-century dress stand among trees, doorways and hatched ground, useful as drop caps, spot vignettes of costume and gesture, or sources of dense line-hatched texture.
