A nine-volume scholarly catalogue raisonné of Dutch, Flemish and French painters compiled by the London dealer John Smith and published by Smith and Son from 1829, listing pictures, prices, owners and engravers for collectors, dealers and connoisseurs. The plates are dark halftone reproductions of Old Master oil paintings—self-portraits in oval frames, ruffed burghers against black grounds, equestrian and full-length aristocratic portraits, and grouped family portraits with a small dog—useful for heavy chiaroscuro faces, costume detail and period portrait framing.
