Smith, John, -1718 · 1829 · London, Smith and son · 6 pictures

John Smith's multi-volume catalogue raisonné of Dutch, Flemish and French painters, published in London by Smith and Son from 1829, compiled for collectors, dealers and connoisseurs with biographies, picture descriptions and auction prices. The plates are monochrome photogravure reproductions of old master landscapes: storm clouds over a shadowed town, a row of thin trees along a canal, cattle and figures under heavy foliage, a ruined Gothic arch among trees, all tonal and sooty with soft grey skies.
