Rake knitting and its special adaptation to invalid workers
An instruction manual on rake (frame) knitting written by Susan Edith Tracy, an occupational therapy pioneer, published in Boston by Whitcomb & Barrows in 1916 for nurses and bedridden patients taking up handwork. The halftone plates are close photographs of finished garments against plain grounds — a shawl-collar sweater, a cuffed cap, a scalloped-edge blanket, a ribbed chest warmer — giving designers dense stitch texture, ribbing patterns and soft grey tonal fields.
