Rational recreations, in which the principles of numbers and natural philosophy are clearly and copiously elucidated, by a series of easy, entertaining, interesting experiments. Among which are all those commonly performed with the cards
A four-volume English handbook of scientific amusements and card tricks by William Hooper, issued in London in 1794 for amateurs performing parlour experiments in optics, magnetism, hydraulics and arithmetic. The plates are narrow hand-coloured engravings stacking numbered figures on one sheet: lettered alphabet dials, magnetised bars, candle-and-mirror setups, water columns and geared mill mechanisms, useful as flat diagram shapes with washes of blue, pink and yellow.
