Rational recreations : in which the principles of numbers and natural philosophy are clearly and copiously elucidated, by a series of easy, entertaining, interesting experiments : among which are all those commonly performed with the cards
A four-volume English compendium of scientific and mathematical parlour tricks by William Hooper, published in London in 1787 for amateur experimenters and card players. Hand-coloured engraved plates combine lettered diagrams of magnets, dials, and balances with conjuror's hands in ruffled cuffs and a cutaway trick table, useful for figure-labelled apparatus, compass roses, and gesture studies.
