Récréations mathématiques
Édouard Lucas's four-volume collection of mathematical puzzles and games, published in Paris by Gauthier-Villars from 1883 with contributions from Delannoy, Laisant and Lemoine, aimed at amateur puzzlers and teachers. The illustrations are plain letterpress line work: ruled grids with heavy stepped paths marking winning moves in the card game écarté, numbered coordinate rows, and small hatched-circle geometric figures wrapped by text, useful as diagram vocabulary and grid structure.
