Recherches sur les superstitions en Chine
Henri Doré's Recherches sur les superstitions en Chine, issued by the Catholic mission press at Shanghai from 1911, documented Chinese popular religion for French-reading missionaries and scholars. Plates reproduce folk woodcuts and printed charms in flat color on tinted grounds: Guanyin bringing sons, altar interiors with draped curtains, wandering souls under a pine, and sheets of dense talismanic calligraphy.
