Recherches sur les superstitions en Chine
Henri Doré, a French Jesuit in Shanghai, compiled this multi-volume survey of Chinese popular religion and magic for the Catholic mission press in 1911, with French and English captions aimed at missionaries and Western scholars. Numbered plates show gods, temple statues and robed officials in flat washes of color against bare backgrounds — usable as isolated figures, stylized cloud and flame shapes, and patterned robes.
