Recherches sur les superstitions en Chine
Henri Doré's Recherches sur les superstitions en Chine, issued in Shanghai by the Catholic mission from 1911, documents Chinese popular religion, magic and moral legend for European missionaries and scholars. Numbered figures reproduce Chinese popular prints in flat watercolour washes—robed officials, kneeling petitioners, lattice windows and bare garden trees—useful for costume silhouettes, moon-gate and screen framing devices, and clear line-plus-flat-colour figure groups.
