Regia via crucis
A Latin emblem and prayer book on the Way of the Cross written by the Benedictine Benedictus van Haeften and printed at the Plantin press of Balthasar Moretus in Antwerp in 1635, with engravings after Peter Paul Rubens for Catholic readers' meditation. The pages seen here are historiated woodcut initials, hand-coloured in red and blue, in which small robed and mitred figures stand in hatched landscapes with towns, rays and rocks behind them; useful as ready-made decorative capitals and as compact figure vignettes.
