Religious emblems : being a series of engravings on wood, executed by the first artists of that line, from designs drawn on the blocks themselves
A London emblem book of 1809, designed on the block by John Thurston and cut by Branston, Nesbit and other wood engravers for Joseph Thomas, pairing Christian symbols with devotional verse for pious readers. The plates are small oval vignettes in ruled frames: veiled and hooded figures in caves, winged angels wrestling in cloud, dense black shading against blank paper.
