The religious system of China, its ancient forms, evolution, history and present aspect, manners, customs and social institutions connected therewith. Published with a subvention from the Dutch colonial government
A multi-volume scholarly account of Chinese funeral rites, ancestor worship and grave customs by the Dutch sinologist J. J. M. de Groot, issued in Leyden by E. J. Brill in 1892 with Dutch colonial government support for European orientalists and ethnographers. The plates are halftone photographs of stone memorial archways, tomb gateways and walled burial enclosures, offering tiered tiled roof silhouettes, carved lintel panels, inscribed tablets and guardian-lion finials that can be traced as flat ornament or architectural profiles.
