The religious system of China, its ancient forms, evolution, history and present aspect, manners, customs and social institutions connected therewith. Published with a subvention from the Dutch colonial government
A Dutch sinologist's multi-volume study of Chinese religion, funeral rites, demonology and ancestor worship, written by J. J. M. de Groot and issued by E. J. Brill in Leyden from 1892 with Dutch colonial government support for scholars of Asia. The plates are outline redrawings of Chinese woodblock scenes: demons at windows, willows and pines, tiled roofs, latticed screens, exorcists and spirit-ridden households, all in thin uniform line suited to enlargement or recoloring.
