Remarks on English churches and on the expediency of rendering sepulchral memorials subservient to pious and Christian uses
An 1843 antiquarian tract by James Heywood Markland, published in Oxford by J.H. Parker, arguing for Gothic principles in English church fabric and sepulchral monuments, addressed to clergy, restorers and ecclesiological societies of the early Gothic Revival. The plates and cuts are wood-engraved outline ornament — trefoil and ivy-leaf arcaded borders, foliate scroll headpieces, crocketed cusping and grotesque beasts in corner brackets — usable as rules, page frames and section dividers at small sizes.
