Lodovico Antonio Muratori's Riflessioni sopra il buon gusto nelle scienze e nelle arti, a treatise on taste and method in learning printed in 1721 under a Cologne imprint for Italian scholarly readers. The plates are woodcut decorated initials — square letters set in foliage, acanthus scrolls and a flowering sprig, some ruled with a border, printed with inked-over edges on laid paper — usable as drop caps, monogram models or texture for letterpress-style headings.
