Raffaello Borghini's Il riposo, a dialogue on painting and sculpture with accounts of celebrated artists and their works, printed in Florence by Giorgio Marescotti in 1584 for cultivated readers and practitioners. The pictures are square woodcut initials: letters set against white-vine and acanthus scrollwork, flowers, or hatched landscapes with seated figures, usable as drop caps, monograms, and small framed vignettes.
