Romance of the French abbeys
A popular account of French monastic houses and their legends, written by the American novelist Elizabeth W. Champney and issued in 1905 by G. P. Putnam's Sons in New York and London for general readers and travellers. The 85 plates are grey halftone photographs of abbey exteriors, cloister walks, vaulted interiors and ruined window tracery, useful for Gothic arch and rose-window silhouettes, weathered masonry texture, and soft tonal backdrops behind type.
