Roman church mosaics of the first nine centuries
A 1906 American study by William Warner Bishop, printed in Massachusetts, cataloguing the mosaics of Roman churches from the fourth through ninth centuries for scholars of early Christian art. Halftone photographs show apse and triumphal-arch compositions: enthroned Christ in a mandorla, ranks of haloed saints and processing figures, jewelled crosses, and bands of Latin dedicatory lettering usable as ornament and layout models.
