The ruined abbeys of Yorkshire
An antiquarian topographical survey of Yorkshire's monastic ruins, written by William Chambers Lefroy and published in London by Seeley and Co. in 1891 for Victorian readers of church history and picturesque travel. The plates are pen-and-ink and wood-engraved views of roofless abbey walls, Gothic window tracery and Norman arches half-buried in foliage, with dense crosshatched trees and open paper skies useful for texture fills, silhouetted arch shapes and landscape backgrounds.
