Ruisdaal
A small 1907 monograph on the seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael, issued in Boston by Bates and Guild for art students and general readers. Twelve halftone plates reproduce his paintings in soft grey wash: towering cloud banks over flat shorelines, masted ships at anchor, wooded bluffs and gnarled oaks, useful as tonal skies, silhouetted foliage and horizon textures.
