A volume from the Paris series Les maîtres humoristes (Juven, 1905), gathering captioned cartoons by Jean-Louis Forain, Gavarni, Caran d'Ache and Hermann-Paul for French readers of the illustrated satirical press. The drawings are brush-and-ink figure scenes of bourgeois and street life, built from heavy black masses and quick contour lines on bare paper, useful for silhouettes, gestural crowd figures and period costume.
