A volume from the Paris series Les maîtres humoristes, issued by Juven in 1905, gathering captioned cartoons by Gavarni, Jean-Louis Forain, Caran d'Ache and Hermann-Paul for French readers of satirical weeklies. The drawings are soft crayon lithographs of two or three figures — top-hatted men, women in long skirts, servants, bedside and café corners — set against smudged grey grounds with little furniture, useful for loose gestural figure groups, sooty shading and caption-and-image layouts.
