Sacred art; the Bible story pictured by eminent modern painters;
An anthology of Bible subjects painted by nineteenth-century European artists, compiled by Alfred George Temple, director of the Guildhall Art Gallery, and issued by Cassell in London and New York in 1903 for a general religious and art-buying readership. The 200 halftone plates reproduce oil paintings in soft grey tonal ranges: robed crowds in Near Eastern dress, angels and winged figures, rocky landscapes and storm-lit skies, useful for figure groupings, drapery studies and atmospheric backgrounds.
