Bivero, Pedro de, 1572-1655 · 1634 · [Antverpiae : Ex officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti] · 30 pictures

A Latin emblem book on the cross and Christian endurance, written by the Jesuit Pedro de Bivero and printed in Antwerp in 1634 at the Plantin press of Balthasar Moretus for devotional and meditative readers. The plates pair emblematic scenes of suffering with decorated woodcut initials, where letters sit among acanthus scrolls, flowering stems, urns and small working figures, useful as drop caps and ornament stock.
