Sartor resartus
Thomas Carlyle's 1836 philosophical satire on clothes and belief, reissued in 1900 by W. B. Conkey of Chicago as an inexpensive illustrated edition for American general readers. Signed wash drawings reproduced in halftone show a cloaked rider on a country road, an embrace in a curtained parlour, and a farmer hoeing rows, alongside a photographic profile portrait of Carlyle; useful for soft grey tonal figures, silhouetted riders, and period interior scenes.
